Bio

I am Karim Alexander aka ‘karimthedream’ I was born and raised in South Africa. I have been dancing since the age of 3 years old. Description of class

Amapiano is a genre that’s from the early 2000’s and comes from the sounds of Kwaito. In my class I’m going to focus on the energy, control and the movement of the body. We will be focusing on study of the beats and listening to the song to understand why it the way it is. I will also focus on facial expressions during a performance and catching fast pace choreography. My class will be beginner friendly but very intermediate/advanced.

Description of class

Shuffle dance has been one of the biggest trends on Instagram and TikTok in the recent few years. There’s something so mesmerizing about the fast and precise footwork and hitting the EDM beats. Shuffle dance originates from the 80s Australian underground rave scenes and consists mostly of fast foot movements, such as the running man, t-step and v-step. This is what we know as the Melbourne shuffle style. Another substyle of shuffling is cutting shapes, which has its roots in the UK rave scenes. Cutting shapes is more energetic and consists of a lot of heel-toe movements, such as charleston and scissors. In our open classes we get to experience both styles by getting to know the fundamentals, learning shuffle choreographies and practicing freestyling/mirroring.

contemporary

Marlie Salomé

Bio

Hi y’all! My name is Marlie and I’m a dancer, teacher and choreographer. I mainly focus on contemporary styles with influences from other body-languages. My main goal within dancing is to dive deep into your own body and how to invest in the movement, the full body and the energy we use to create it. If people would have to describe me they’d say that I am a powerhouse with the ability to flow and float.

I love to share hard work and enjoyment during my class. That means you will definitely sweat and be pushed a little bit ;)

But it also means you will gain new knowledge and find ways to connect the movements and align them with musicality. Within my class it is not about the shape of the movements itself but how you approach it, how you get there, how you search for it and bring it together. We will move around the space, use a lot of groove, feel grounded, have highlights in the upper body and we won’t be afraid to sweep the floor ;)

After she graduated high school she created her own training schedule by taking a variety of classes in Amsterdam to be as allround as possible. She lived in New York City for a couple of months to participate in a training program at Broadway Dance Centre. Here she focused on contemporary and commercial styles. Her love for contemporary dance grew a lot in these years and she decided to share this love through teaching this art form.

‘In the first part of class I focus on getting ‘into’ your body. I’ll help the students do this by giving them improvisation exercises that will spark their imagination. In the second part I focus on a choreography.

In my classes I really try to make sure people feel safe and free. Free to make their own choices in dance and free to be able to express their feelings. Whenever I teach a choreo I encourage my students to really listen to the lyrics and dive into the emotion of the song. I invite them to think of situations in their own lives that could possibly resemble that emotion. It’s so beautiful to see when people surrender to their feelings and really dance it out. It gives me goosebumps.

If the things I just said resonate with you or if you ever just feel the need to dance to sad (and sometimes happy) songs… Please feel free to join my class. I’d love to have you here!’
